Shirley Sparks is a Finnish crossover singer, composer, and performing artist with a highly versatile background in both classical and popular music. She began her career with a classical soprano repertoire — from early music to opera and contemporary works — performing, among others, the title role in Händel's Almira, the Naiad in Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos, Amore in Monteverdi’s Il Ballo Delle Ingrate, a soprano solo in Tom Johnson’s The Four Note Opera, the female demon in Kojima’s musical Kanawa, and a soprano solo in Herman Rechberger’s commissioned work La Piedra De Don. Additionally, she has performed extensively in recital with Italian-, Spanish-, Swedish-, English- and Finnish-language solo vocal repertoire as well as musical theatre selections, and spent three years performing with the Savonlinna Opera Festival Chorus.
In 2015, Shirley shifted her focus to lighter music, particularly early 20th-century American songs from The Great American Songbook. At the same time, she adopted the stage name Shirley Sparks as a tribute to the artist culture of the Golden Hollywood era. She has performed numerous concerts with various jazz pianists and musicians in Finland and the UK, founded her own ensembles, and appeared as a soloist with the Antti Sarpila Swing Band at Tampere Hall and Sellosali.
Shirley increasingly works as a composer, creating both orchestral music and her own vocal repertoire in both Finnish and English, ranging stylistically from classical to lighter genres. Her compositions have been featured in children’s plays, short films, and the space-themed animated art piece The Grand Tour (Lighthouse Digital Art Gallery, Berlin). She has released three albums: Pimeä valo (2011), Dreams of a Butterfly (with pianist Eliina Taal, 2023), and Silhouettes of Paris (with pianist Janne Hovi, 2025). She has also presented a composition concert titled Minä rakastan ja elän (with pianist Jussi Rinta), featuring songs set to poems by Annikki Furuholm. Her latest work, premiered in autumn 2025 at Vindängensali in Espoo, is the multimedia concert MYTHOS – Eternal Fire, created in collaboration with multimedia animator Kalleheikki Kannisto. Shirley composed both the live musical-style songs and the orchestrated digital cinematic background music, and performed as the vocal soloist, with Janne Hovi on piano.
Shirley is also known for her original Classics & Evergreens concert programs, which she designs and presents by combining music, visual elements, and theatrical approaches. Themes have included 1920’s Cat’s Meow Christmas, The American Dream 1920’s, Blondin kosto – Herrat pitävät vaaleaveriköistä, Magical Christmas, Chaplin Eternally, The Life and Songs of Peggy Lee, and 1950s film and musical hits.
Shirley studied church music at the Sibelius Academy, Kuopio department, and early music/baroque singing at Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Helsinki. She graduated as a vocal pedagogue from Metropolia AMK’s Lied and Opera Department (thesis on female roles in Verdi operas) and holds a Master of Arts in Music, History and Culture from Oxford Brookes University, UK (studying English opera history and contemporary British theatre). Shirley also has a degree in cultural management (Työväen Akatemia, Kauniainen) and has completed studies in cultural history (Turku Open University).
In addition to singing, Shirley has performed as an actress in short films and theatre productions (including Myrskyluodon Maija, Teatteri Vire) and worked as an audiobook narrator. She often designs her own stage costumes, driven by a passion for fashion history and theatrical attire.
